Shine 2010 was among the first group of Johannesburg’s public to ride the Gautrain – and impressed we certainly were. We also took the opportunity to interview Erool Braithwaite, marketing executive of the Bombela Consortium, the chaps who are putting it all together just ahead of the 2010 World Cup.

It’s a touchy issue and one with which not everyone is comfortable. Regardless of your views, however, prostitution is a grim reality in South Africa just as it is everywhere around the world. Along with the joys of the 2010 World Cup Tournament comes the potential for an influx of trade for sex workers – and the even darker side of sex work, including human trafficking. Shine 2010 gets to grips with some of the issues with Marlise Richter, a lecturer at the Steve Biko Centre for Bioethics and Jo-Ann Downs of the African Christian Democratic Party.

Today, Shine 2010 meets with Dr. Nikolaus Eberl, a brand expert who has published several books on how Germany successfully changed global perceptions of its country and people through the World Cup 2006. Dr. Nick believes South Africa has a unique opportunity to achieve a similar transformation of perceptions – not just for our country, but for the continent as a whole.

What effect does the 2010 World Cup have for the average South African? That’s a question which is hard to pin down. However, in meeting with Vivienne Schultz of Amajobjob, Shine 2010 discovers that it brings hope and the promise of increased markets for innovative products which aim to lift South Africans out of poverty.

Road safety’s something we should all be concerned about – it is a major killer in our country. With the World Cup on its way, Shine2010 meets with Johan Jonck, founder of www.arrivealive.co.za and road safety advocate (he’s an advocate in the legal sense, too) to find out more about our roads and the risks of millions of foreign visitors on them.
